E-Coat Surface Finish: The Game-Changer for Restoring Classic Cars

Introduction

We are thrilled to announce that we are now offering an e-Coat surface finish on all our bulkheads, and the best part is, it’s completely free of charge! This means that when you purchase one of our high-quality bulkheads, you will not only receive a bespoke bulkhead but also enjoy the added benefit of a premium surface finish.

What is E-Coat and How Does It Work?

E-coating, also known as electrocoating or electrophoretic deposition, is a revolutionary method for applying a protective coating to metal surfaces. This process involves dipping the metal part in a tank of paint, where an electrical current is used to deposit the paint particles onto the surface. The result is a uniform, durable, and corrosion-resistant coating that adheres perfectly to the metal, even in hard-to-reach areas.

It’s a popular choice on classic car components for several reasons:

Corrosion Protection

E-coating provides excellent corrosion resistance and it allows for the preservation of the original metalwork. Unlike traditional painting methods, e-coating ensures consistent coverage without adding unnecessary bulk or altering the intricate details of classic cars. It forms a protective barrier that prevents rust and other forms of corrosion.

Uniform Coverage

The bulkheads are dipped into a tank full of the e-coat paint until the entire surface is covered before the oven cure takes place.  With this in mind, we can always ensure full coverage every time, due to the surfaces being completely submerged into the paint, the process can offer 100% coverage – even on hard to reach areas such as cavities. This is a factor that makes it stand out amongst other coatings that cannot guarantee these high levels of coverage.

Enhanced Adhesion

E-Coating provides excellent adhesion to the metal surface, creating a strong bond. This ensures that the paint or other topcoat applied over the e-coat adheres well and lasts longer, resulting in a smoother and more professional looking finish.

Environmentally Friendly Process

Unlike traditional painting methods that produce harmful VOC emissions, e-coating is an environmentally sustainable process. It eliminates the need for solvents and reduces waste, making it a more eco-friendly choice for classic car restoration.

The E-Coating Process in Action

The e-coating process begins with the preparation of the metal surface, which involves cleaning and treating the substrate to ensure optimal adhesion. The metal part is then dipped in the e-coat bath, where an electrical charge is applied, causing the paint particles to migrate and deposit onto the surface.

Once the e-coating is complete, the metal part undergoes curing in an oven, where the paint is baked to form a durable and resilient finish. The result is a flawless, long-lasting coating that protects the metal from corrosion and environmental damage.

In the realm of classic car restoration, e-Coating has emerged as a game-changer, offering a host of benefits that traditional painting methods simply cannot match. From its superior corrosion protection to its ability to preserve the authenticity of classic cars, e-coating has revolutionized the way they are restored, ensuring that these automotive treasures continue to dazzle for generations to come.
